The Empire Overseas
1-'The Gateway of Canada '
C. A. OAKLEY and G. B. JOHNSON
' The Empire Overseas' is the first stage of a three-year rota to cover the Empire, Great Britain, and Europe. The course, which has been planned by D. L. Linton , Lecturer in Geography in the University of Edinburgh, aims at giving pupils a vivid picture of the life and environment of different parts of the Empire. Each speaker will have an intimate personal acquaintance with his subject. The element of personal experience will, indeed, predominate in all the talks, as the Committee feel that this is the most valuable contribution that broadcasting can make to the geography course in the junior classes.
Important geographical facts will not be ignored ; but these will be conveyed in terms of concrete description, incident, and adventure. The talks will be linked by descriptions of journeys, which should help to give the pupils an idea of space and movement, as well as co-ordinating the talks into a complete picture.
Methods of presentation will be varied as much as possible. Some of these will be regarded as experiments, and teachers and pupils are invited to record their impressions.
