This play deals with the life of the great Scottish national hero from the time that he saw himself in a vision as his country's liberator and the antagonist of Edward Longshanks , down to the sentence of death passed on him by an English court. Mr. Thomson regards Wallace not merely as a romantic figure, but as a fierce, almost unmanageable force which stops at nothing, even the death of friends, to secure Scottish independence. It is one of the traditions of the playwright's craft that many of the best plays are written by those who have had experience on the stage. Mr. Thomson is in this tradition. Before going to London he was a prominent member of the Scottish National Players.
