By J. I. E. MITCHELL
NORA K. MITCHELL , in Scottish Nursery
Rhymes
Scotland is particularly rich in nursery rhymes and in poems written about children. The former include riddles, invocations, addresses to animals, and short pieces descriptive of the supernatural. Not a few of these rhymes (and in this they are probably distinctive from the nursery rhymes of some other countries) are intended to frighten. It always seems to have been a problem in Scotland how to get children off to bed and distracted mothers drew freely on the available stock of terrifying verse. Fortunately for the peace of mind of the average child, however, there has always been a plentiful supply of rhymes conducive to pleasant dreams. Nora Mitchell , who is well known to listeners in other types of broadcast programmes, will probably be more embarrassed by the great amount of available material than by lack of it.
