At the end of the twelfth century the Abbot of Lindores founded the Parish Church in Dundee, and it is believed that David, Earl of Huntingdon ('the Knight of the Leopard' in Scott's 'Talisman'), built St. Mary's as an act of gratitude for his safe return from the Third Crusade. When the Reformation came in 1560 this Parish Church was the first in Scotland to be organised according to the Protestant Faith. Dundee was then known as 'the Geneva of Scotland'. Today it is divided into three churches, with three separate congregations. The present church, after a disastrous fire, was rebuilt, and opened in 1844.
