An unusual feature of this evening's 'Spotlight' will be the discussion on running. J. E. Mayne, a Leeds cross-country runner and authority on long-distance running, has broadcast before on this fascinating sport, which he considers the greatest in the world.
Ernie Harper, who lives in the Sheffield district in a house presented to him by his admirers, has gained many national and international championships and records. At Glasgow in 1932, for instance, he gained the world's record for two hours' running, during which he covered nearly twenty-one miles; he has been in Olympic and international teams; and one of his notable achievements was the gaining of second place in the Olympic Games Marathon at Berlin two years ago.
He tells of how early in this race one runner set a tremendous pace and forged well ahead. A Japanese entrant began to strain to catch the leader. Harper, running nearby, counselled: 'He can't keep up this pace - he will run himself out. Stick by me for a bit and "save" yourself.' The leader had, indeed, made his bid too early, and this race was won by the Japanese, Harper coming in second.
