Overture, Berenice Handel 
One of the last operas Handel composed, Berenice now survives only in an aria, the celebrated minuet, and this overture. It is not an overture in the manner of most other and later operatic preludes, and does nothing to forecast what is to happen on the stage. Rather is it an instrumental diversion to employ the time before the rise of the curtain and to give a foretaste of the quality of the succeeding music. It is in three short movements, but continuous, with very slight pauses between the movements. The Andante movement contains the air from which the well-known minuet was evolved.   
The Fairy Queen is an anonymous adaptation of A Midsummer Night's 
Dream and was produced in 1692. The 'Select Songs' were the only part of the music that appeared in Purcell's lifetime. By the year 1700, the score had been lost. In 1901 the theatre copy of the music was discovered in the library of the Royal Academy of Music.
