Here is well-varied light entertainment from Cumberland and the West Riding of Yorkshire; from theatres, built in the 'seventies, which possess two of the biggest stages in the provinces.
Her Majesty's at Carlisle stands on a site originally occupied by a building called the Victoria Hall. This earlier hall was put up in 1874, and it became Her Majesty's Theatre five years later. Fire destroyed it in 1904, but after quick rebuilding the re-opening was achieved in the following year. Both theatres are rich in tradition and both have been visited by many of the world's most famous stage players. Wilson Barrett was the first lessee of the Grand at
Leeds, opened in 1878-' the Great Yorkshire County Theatre '. The auditorium was constructed on lines similar to those of Milan Opera House, with twenty-two boxes. It has accommodation for well over
2,000 people. Normally the Grand houses once-nightly entertainment.
