Verdi's Stabat Mater is one of a group of four religious compositions written at the end of the composer's life. Scored for full orchestra and choir, it possesses many of the dramatic and colourful characteristics of the Requiem. A picture of the Divine Agony on the Cross, which is shared by the Virgin, is vividly painted in' the music.
