Birmingham The Birmingham City Police Band has frequently broadcast in the Midland programme, but has not been heard for more than three years. It is one of the finest in the country, and now has some sixty-five players. The late Chief Constable, Sir Charles Rafter , who was an accomplished flautist and an authority on wind instruments, did much by his encouragement and support to enhance its reputation. It played regularly in the Birmingham parks as well as giving Town Hall concerts. Its civilian music director has for many years been Richard Wassell , the well-known Birmingham conductor, whose enthusiastic promotion of orchestral concerts led the way to the formation of a permanent orchestra in Birmingham.
