DONIZETTI was writing operas from 1818 to 1844, and so bridged the period between Rossini and Verdi. Not all his operas were successful; he wrote sixty-three of them and could scarcely have expected more than a few of them to hit the public taste. Belisario is not one of the popular ones, and has probably never been heard on the London stage. It was written in 1836-doubtless in a month or less, as was Donizetti's custom-and begins with Lucia di Lammermoor, the short period when he basked in European fame.
