Ysaye were born in Liége, and it was natural that the older musician should be interested in the younger, particularly as Ysaye was, in the opinion of many, the greatest violinist of his day. So struck was Franck at the talent of the young violinist, then about twenty-eight, that he determined to write for him and Madame Bordes-Pene, 4 great pianist who died early, a work-worthy of them. This is the Sonata he composed with that purpose in view.
