LUIGI BOCCHERINI , an Italian musician, born in Lucca in 1743, came subsequently to be known as a Spanish composer for much the same reason as Handel came to be regarded as an English composer. Boccherini was in France as a young man, and attracted the notice of the Spanish Ambassador, who induced him to visit Madrid. He did so, and for the remainder of his life was, for the most part, resident in Madrid. He was a facile composer, and it was said of him that it was only necessary to turn the cock to regulate the flow of music, as from a fountain. Most of his compositions are chamber music, but he wrote at least twenty symphonies for orchestra. This one is the best-known and the most frequently played.
