THE real name of 'Stephen Adams' was JL Michael Maybrick, to all accounts as handsome a man as ever graced a concert platform. He sang under his own name, and sang, of course. his own songs. J.L. Molloy, another immensely popular song writer of the day whose songs Maybrick also used to sing, either did not, or pretended not to know the facts. 'You have a splendid voice, Maybrick' he once said; 'what a pitv you waste it on those rubbishy songs of Stephen Adams.' But, even joking apart, songs which reached such colossal popularity as did the songs of Stephen Adams could not have been made up of rubbish. It is true The Holy City. which sold then by the million, and The Star of Bethlehem would have no such luck today, but only because our taste in these things is different, not necessarily better. Again, what is wrong with Nancy Lee? It passed for a good sea-song, as indeed it is, and the words are not a whit more sentimental than Dibdin's Tom Bowling or the sacrosanct folk-song, The Golden Vanity, while the music has of course been bettered, but not very often in that type of song. In those days Nancy Lee was in the music-case of every young man on his way to a party. Du Maurier immortalized the fact in Punch with his pen-drawing of ten young baritones turning up at an evening party each armed with a copy of Nancy Lee.
