Professor of Physics in the University of Hull
2-New Lamps for Old
As the result of research in solid-state physics hardly a year goes by without the introduction of a new electronic competitor to existing devices. The transistor, or crystal triode, is well known as one of these; a newcomer is the thermo-electric unit, which can produce electric power from heat or act as a refrigerator.
Professor Garlick describes both these
' brain children ' of solid-state physics, explains how they work, and suggests future possibilities.
