Mr. DESMOND MACCARTHY: Biography '
Boswell's Johnson; Walton's Lives
The modern taste for biography, stimulated by the new science of psychology and the old game of re-examining predecessors in the light of new facts, has sound basis in our literary tradition. Mr. MacCarthy discusses two of the greatest achievements in the biographical art in the language. Boswell's ' Johnson ' is unique: by his marvellous gift for reporting the conversation of a great conversationalist, that erratic Scot achieved immortality for himself as well as his subject. Isaak Walton 's Lives of Donne, Sir Henry Wotton and other seventeenth-century worthies are models of lucid brevity, very close to the modern spirit in biography. They were published in 1670, seventeen years after ' The Compleat Angler,' and were edited by Professor George Saintsbury in 1927. This should be one of the most fascinating of Mr. MacCarthy's introductions of old writers to new readers.
