The dining-room at Harvey Western's house. As the curtain rises, the room is in darkness. William, the footman, enters hurriedly, and switches on the light. He rushes to the table, looks cagerly around, then goes oh his hands and knees and searches on the carpet. After a moment, Smithers, a lady's maid, follows him.
