This Sammartini is presumably Giovanni of that name (also spelt San Martini), one of two brothers whose Chamber Music was very popular here in the eighteenth century. Dr. Burney, our musical historian, says that he 'wrote an incredible number of spirited and agreeable compositions' for Strings, and was at one time Choirmaster to 'more than half of the churches in Milan, for which he furnished Masses upon all great festivals.'
Some of Sammartini's String music has been re-edited by the French 'cellist of our day, Joseph Salmon.
The Sonatas are almost always in the form characteristic of such works at that time - four (sometimes three) contrasted Movements, alternately slow and quick.
