Joseph Laing Waugh.
Portrayed by Augustus Beddie.
Those of us who know something of life in our Scottish villages have all met that kindly soul, Robbie Doo, of Mr. Waugh's creation. We venerate and love such men for the big heart they possess, for the loving interest they display, especially for the sons of their particular village, many of whom go out from obscurity to take their places with the great men of the world.
Many such have come out of the little Dumfriesshire village of Thornhill to rank with the really great.
We could say with James Russell Lowell: "The soil of which such men are made is good to be born on, good to live on, good to die for and to be buried in."
