In order of their speaking, the characters are: Miriam, the daughter of Mrs Tomlinson - Hilda Bruce Petts; Mrs Tomlinson, a cottager - Adah Dicks; Joe Halliday, a Yorkshire mill-owner - Henry Oscar; Martha Halliday, his wife - Miriam Ferris; Annie, her daughter - Phillis panting. In the cosy parlour of Mrs Tomlinson's cottage in the Yorkshire Dales, she and her daughter are preparing the room for the reception of any visitors who may call. A handsome grandfather clock stands against the wall, and an old settle, a chest of drawers, and one ro two old-fashioned chairs are included in the furniture of the room.
