(" Cyrano de Bergerac ")
(Edmond Rostand ). People In the Scene :
Cyrano de Bergerac, Soldier, Poet,
Philosopher, Metaphysician, is the perfect type of the cavalier. Possessed of a heart overflowing with romance, he is cursed with a nose of such absurd proportions that no one can look on it without laughing. The genius of Rostand has made this extraordinary personage one of the greatest tragic characters in modern drama.
Cyrano loves Roxane, but his nose makes it impossible for any woman to love Cyrano. Roxano has fallen in love with Christian, a very handsome, but not very intelligent, youth. Cyrano, glad of any opportunity of expressing his love for Roxane-even at second hand-coaches Christian in the conduct of his courtship, and composes his letters and poems.
In the scene to be presented,
Christian's strange wooing has reached its crisis. He thinks he is now able to carry on unaided, but fails miserably, and again has to call upon Cyrano for help. Standing in the darkness under her balcony, Cyrano pours out the love in his own heart, in order to win Roxane for his rival.
