Farm, in Devonshire, in the year 1697, twelve years after tho Monmouth Rebellion. Grannie Mallom is pottering about preparing the supper in the dimly-lighted kitchen-sunlight is slanting in from a small window, and a log fire is burning. Grannie pokes the fire and mutters to herself.
