THE STATION ORCHESTRA, conducted by JOSEPH LEWIS THE young Charpentier. having won at the Paris Conservatoire the premier prize in composition (the ' Prix de Rome went. under the terms of the award, to study in Italy, and it was there that he thought out the five pieces comprising an Italian Suite-of which Napoli is the last.
He explains in a note prefixed to his score that he set out ' to depict in music the city of Naples, its population, its outdoor life and joyousness. First, we are aware of scattered sounds and vibrations; of heat. light. and the hum of the' crowd.
