THE BIRMINGHAM STUDIO
ORCHESTRA
Conducted by FRANK CANTELL
ELMA BAKER (Soprano)
This Comic Opera of Rossini's, produced in Milan in 1817, given first in London in 1821. afterwards in English, adapted by Bishop, in 1830, was one of his many popular successes. The Overture is simpler and slighter in construction than many of his, consisting only of two sections, the first in a rather majestic rhythm with a hint of martial vigour, and the other in a swift three-in-the-bar, with a melody made up, like so many of Rossini's. of a repeated triplet figure. It is rounded off by a brief coda in still swifter tempo than the principal movement.
