SCENE 1
February, 1588. The Duke of Medina
Sedonia at the Escurial, the residence of King Phillip, discusses the Armada with Valdes, Admiral of the Fleet of Castile, and the ability of Santa Cruz to lead it to victory. The King's Secretary arrives, and informs them that Santa Cruz has died.
SCENE 2
On board the San Martin on the night of July 28, 1588, off the Calais Roads. Medina Sedonia , having successfully cut his way through the English Fleet, is now waiting to escort the Duke of Parma to England. He learns to his mortification that Parma will not be ready for at least a fortnight.
SCENE 3
The Escurial. This scene chiefly concerns the meeting of the defeated Admiral and King Phillip II.
