A Mendelssohn was entering Fin. gal's Cave in Staffa a tune sprang to his brain, born of his genius and of Nature's disquiet. It grew into this Overture (so called, although it is not the prelude to a larger work), which is known also as the ' Hebrides ' Overture. The tune, a short but pregnant figure, appears at first in the bass.
