Scene: The Hampsons' drawing-room in a London suburb. They are of the upper-middle class; he is sixty, she fifty-four years of age, both of medium build. They are sitting by the fire, listening to the wireless programme. Mr. Hampson is smoking a pipe and has the evening paper over his knees. Mrs. Hampson is quietly darning stockings, and Mr. Hampson, in turning the pages of his newspaper, disturbs his wife.
