DR. COULTON is one of the best-known authorities today on life in the Middle Ages, his many books on the subject including ' Mediæval Studies,' ' A Mediaeval Garner,' ' The Mediaeval Village,' and ' Social Life in Britain from the Conquest to the Reformation.' He is a Follow of St. John's College, Cambridge. His first talk in this series is introductory and serves to put before th& listener a necessary background for the remaining talks. Dr. Coulton will tell of the idea! state as sketched by St. Augustine in his ' City of God,' which inspired the whole Middle Ages; and of Feudalism, which, because of the helpless people clustered round great churchmen and great land-owners, dictated the conditions, colour, and whole fabrio of life at that time.
