As conductor, composer, pianist, and enthusiast in the best interests of music, Great Britain, his adopted country, owes Sir George Henschel more than there is room to set forth in these columns. As singer, too, to his own accompaniment, particularly of Schubert's songs, he has a very strong hold on our affections. But that ho can give himself wholeheartedly to the mirthful side of music, as he does so successfully in this comic opera, need astonish no one who knows the buoyant vitality which makes him in his seventy-ninth year one of the youngest people in England. His collaborator, W.D. Howells, who died in 1920, held a distinguished position in the world of letters. A Sea Change, a burlesque opera in what was in those days the popular style, was first published in America in the 'nineties, but until tonight, has never been performed in England.
