Characters :
The Scene is laid in a small provincial town in Russia. Mind Picture : Praskovya's sitting-room. It is night; the light of an oil lamp in the street dimly shows snow-covered houses and falling snow. The room is plainly furnished. Varvara is discovered sitting by a lamp darning stockings. There is an atmosphere of silence, solitude and Russian monotony; the clock ticks ; there is a sound of a concertina in the distance- then silence again.
