James Pearson , a Scots settler in Otago, has gone to the Lindis Pass gold diggings where he opened a store which was burnt down. £ 1,000 of the miners' gold, which he had in his keeping, was stolen. With Pearson are his children, Jane and Robert, Sam Jolly his partner, and also Martha and her baby-whom Pearson met on his trip to the Lindis and was persuaded to take along with him.
