Dr. and Mrs. Dale went away for a country weekend with Alec and Miriam. Elsie saw an advertisement asking for a black cat to take part in a play. She took Captain to be auditioned, as a surprise for Mrs. Freeman, and he got the job. Mrs. Freeman was furious but finally agreed to his taking part. She went to stay with Sally and Richard while Captain was performing, and quarrelled with Richard. Sally told Fickling he must choose between Mrs. Phillips and Maisie to be the new maid.
