'Baby in a Plaster jacket,' by [text removed]. This was me, Elizabeth (Buffy).
In May, 1949, the speaker told listeners about her baby with a congenital dislocation of the hip. Today she tells how the trouble was overcome and of the friends she made and the comfort she received as a result of her broadcast. Subsequently she was interviewed by the BBC on the subject of being a Granny to a child born with CDH, my daughter.
Her hip problem was identified at birth, but with only a possible diagnosis, as a result of The "Schluk" test, which was not applied, when I was born. At 4 months the diagnosis was confirmed and she went from wearing a plaster "nappy" to a splint, resembling a hanger, to keep her legs apart and force the ball to dig out a deeper acetabulum. Her case shows how "medecine marches on".
I have just watched Victoria achieve a time of 3.43.45 hours in her 5th London marathon, whereas I'm awaiting a reconstruction of my left hip joint. I had my right hip replaced in 1994 (the one with the CDH) and my left replaced in 2000.
