Haydn's so-called ' Schoolmaster ' Symphony dates from 1774, two years later than the Farewell,' but eighteen to twenty years earlier than the composer's best-known symphonies. the magnificent ' Salomon ' set. Nobody appears to know for certain how it acquired its title. Stendhal called it 'The Enamoured Schoolmaster.' It is scored for a small orchestra: two oboes, two horns, and strings
