General Forces Programme summary
Conductor, Guy Warrack
Beethoven's ' Coriolanus ' is not based on Shakespeare's play, but on an entirely different work by Heinrich Collin. It is a concert overture, and may be considered a forerunner of the symphonic Eoem which was later to be developed by Liszt. There was much in the character of Coriolanus to appeal to a man like Beethoven, whose independent, strongwilled nature was not dissimilar. In the music the composer has aimed at two things : to render musically the character of his hero, and to picture the incident of the famous meeting between Coriolanus, his mother, and his wife.
