Comedienne Joan Rivers tells the tale of Ed Sullivan, the television phenomenon whose variety show unveiled the likes of Bill Haley, Elvis, The Beatles, The Stones and The Doors.

Another chance to hear comedian Joan Rivers with a 2008 tribute to US TV personality Ed Sullivan (1901-74), on whose Sunday night variety show she appeared 19 times. Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Sullivan's first broadcast in 1948, Rivers recalls his early championing of rock-era acts such as Elvis Presley and, perhaps most famously, The Beatles, whose 9 February 1964 appearance reached 60 million viewers. With his unanimated stance that has been imitated often, Sullivan played host to everyone from Woody Allen, The Supremes and Rudolf Nureyev to Edith Piaf, Richard Pryor, Peggy Lee and heroes of US baseball.
The programme explores his critical role in promoting the British Invasion and in giving family viewing airtime to acts such as The Doors, who cheekily ignored the command to tone down the lyrics to Light My Fire.
