The story shifts to mid-1968, when Alpert's solo vocal recording of Bacharach and David's This Guy's in Love with You became a smash hit. Initially dismissed as an uncool valentine strictly for housewives, the gentle melodrama now ranks among pop's definitive ballads, as affirmed tonight by Noel Gallagher. Also a look at the rise of Alpert and Jerry Moss 's profitable independent record label A&M, which established the Carpenters as superstars, boosted Island Records in the UK and advanced the careers of Peter Frampton and the Police.
