The year 1967 saw The Summer of Love. This documentary marks the anniversary of an extraordinary musical and social flowering, when hundreds of thousands of hippies descended on San Francisco to protest against war and expand their minds. 

It chronicles a community who danced to the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, believing they would still be dancing when the sun rose on a New Age. Some of them are dancing still.

Part of Radio 2's 60 Season and presented by Stuart Maconie.

Continuing Radio 2's season of programmes devoted to the music of the Sixties and coinciding with the station's recent 40th birthday, Stuart Maconie explores a critical musical period in 1967 - the so-called Summer of Love - when the hippy aspects of San Francisco youth imbibed mainstream popular culture, with Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead as musical ambassadors.
Those who were there claim that the 1967 Summer of Love was a concept created as a consumer-friendly packaging of something already experienced in 1966 or before. Either way, Radio 2 celebrates its rich legacy.
