'Catholics, C of E, Muslims, Hindus and Jews - I want them all to feel this inspirational germ,' he says. 'I want to lift all their hearts. And the message is - hope.' Lon will present interviews with black celebrities - plus news of the American gospel scene and music from the BBC Gospel Choir of the Year, The Merrybells from Manchester.
Lon himself - currently into his sixth year starring in Starlight Express - was reared on American gospel music, though he has spent the last 20 years in England. 'I came over to do Golden Boy with Sammy Davis Jr and 1 never went back,' he says. Since then he's starred as Othello in the rock musical Catch My Soul, and as CIA agent Strutter in the Bond movie Live and Let Die.
But he always has time for gospel music: 'Part of my performance has inevitably reflected my religious experience - my father was a pastor and my uncle was a Methodist Bishop. Now gospel music is getting to a much wider audience. Our last series had a big response from the prison population. One of the Kray twins was so inspired that he wrote us a poem.' 0 Lon Satton's Gospel Jubilee, Thursday 9.00pm
