British heroine of the centenary Wimbledon, she achieved a lifelong ambition by winning in front of The Queen in 1977. Ranked number one in Britain for a record ten consecutive years, she won all the major tournaments, except the French, and in 1982 became the first woman member of the Wimbledon Committee.
In conversation with Gerald Williams, Virginia reflects on a childhood spent in South Africa, subsequent success, work in the TV commentary box and the future: how does she view the state of British tennis? And will 1985 be her final Wimbledon? She reaches the age where 'life begins' in the week after the Championship.
