While southerners were into funk, the early 70s saw the soul boom in the Midlands and the north. By 1973 the south had discovered Philadelphia, and mellower soul, and George McCrae made number one through club success the following year. Saturday Night Fever brought everyone to the discos at the end of the decade but the purists went underground with the soul weekender.
