[Article] Nicky, the joking jock
Nicky Campbell, who has written comedy scripts for Spitting Image and the Edinburgh Fringe is fast becoming known as the Radio 1 jock who likes a joke in his show on Saturday. But he almost never made it to the pop world: he began his broadcasting career presenting opera on an Aberdeen independent local radio station!
'No, I didn't know anything about opera,' he admits, 'but I had to pretend I did to get the job! Luckily, I was eventually asked to stand in as the presenter of a pop show. That was my big break.'
