[Article] Putting pop first
The Communards take their name from the revolutionaries of the Paris Commune and, as leading lights of rock's Red Wedge, they've espoused any number of left-wing causes. 'But sloganeering is boring,' says the Communard with the choirboy voice, Jimmy Somerville. 'We're a pop band first.' The Communards round off Radio 1's Birthday Weekender with a live performance from Prestatyn on Sunday (3.00).
