John Peel writes:
'Stiff Little Fingers' first single "Suspect Device", issued very early in 1978, came as a revelation to those of us who had assumed Belfast to be a musical no-go area. Lyrically unsqueamish, musically hard and fast. "Suspect Device" is a rock record of the first water. It was followed by "Alternative Ulster" which slammed home almost as hard: an LP which surprised many observers by entering the BBC chart; and a third single, again marginally less impressive than its predecessor called "Gotta Gettaway". The band suited action to the lyric of this last, leaving Belfast for London, extensive touring, and the hosannas of those who see the band as inheriting the mantle of punk cragginess as surrendered by the Sex Pistols and the Clash. Tonight's session is produced by the skilful Bob Sargeant and he has crafted a sound that retains Stiff Little Fingers 'up-and-at-em' approach whilst drawing out subtleties which may indicate a possible direction for the future.'
