Found in Nature - from snowflakes to butterflies - and in art in the music of Bach and the poems of Pushkin, symmetry is both aesthetically pleasing and an essential tool to understanding our physical world. The Greek philosopher Aristotle described symmetry as one of the greatest forms of beauty to be found in the mathematical sciences, while the French poet Paul Valery went further, declaring; “The universe is built on a plan, the profound symmetry of which is somehow present in the inner structure of our intellect”.The story of symmetry tracks an extraordinary shift from its role as an aesthetic model - found in the tiles in the Alhambra and Bach's compositions - to becoming a key tool to understanding how the physical world works. It provides a major breakthrough in mathematics with the development of group theory in the 19th century. And it is the unexpected breakdown of symmetry at sub-atomic level that is so tantalising for contemporary quantum physicists.So why is symmetry so prevalent and appealing in both art and nature? How does symmetry enable us to grapple with monstrous numbers? And how might symmetry contribute to the elusive Theory of Everything?With Fay Dowker, Reader in Theoretical Physics at Imperial College, London; Marcus du Sautoy, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford; Ian Stewart, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick.

How the gay son of a Maharajah is working to protect men from HIV/AIDS.

Linda Pressly reports from the state of Gujarat in India, where the gay son of a Maharajah is working with men to protect them from HIV/AIDS.

Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil is the first openly gay member of India’s royalty, but when he first came out in a newspaper splash, he was shunned not just by the local community of Rajpipla, but by his own parents too.  But the prince is made of sturdy stuff and today the 41-year-old, who now describes himself as a gay activist, is committed to fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS through his non-governmental organisation, the Lakshya Trust.      

India now has the largest number of people in the world living with HIV/AIDS and the Lakshya Trust was set up by Manvendra and his friends to target HIV prevention among men who have sex with men – MSM as they are known, which includes men who may also be in relationships with women. Increasingly there is talk of the ‘feminisation’ of the epidemic in India, with the UN recording that nearly 40% of HIV cases are women who are mostly infected by their husbands.  

At the Lakshya Trust, based in the conservative state of Gujarat, Manvendra believes three-quarters of the men they have contact with are married.  So in a ground-breaking move for an Indian NGO, the Trust began to train female outreach workers to target married women who might be vulnerable to contracting HIV from their husbands.    

In Crossing Continents Linda Pressly profiles the Prince of Rajpipla and in a series of candid interviews she meets men and women whose married lives stray far from what is considered the norm in India.

Alice and Brian can't sleep and sit chatting about Alice's plans. She's reconsidering what to do on her gap year. Alice is surprised that Brian's also having second thoughts about his future plans, even though she doesn't know why.

Debbie's found a potential contractor but Adam's pleased to hear that Brian wants to sit on the decision about whether or not they contract out. When Brian's phone rings, he can't hide the fact that it's Siobhan. Adam's dismayed to see Jennifer so upset and tries to console her. Suddenly, Jennifer spills her heart out and Adam's shocked to learn that Brian has been seeing Ruairi over the years. When Jennifer admits she feels guilty that she can't bring herself to agree to take care of Ruairi, Adam insists they've put her in an impossible situation. Adam wants her to talk to Elizabeth but Jennifer can't bear the thought.

Siobhan feels rough after the treatment and tells Brian how tired she is. Brian wishes he was with her. He says he'll do his best to come but she tells him not to promise anything. For now she's just glad she's getting the treatment, and says they've got to give it the chance to work.
