When James McNeill Whistler 's impressionistic painting of Old Battersea Bridge was first exhibited, the critic John Ruskin accused the artist of "flinging a pot of paint in the face of the public". Whistlertook Ruskin to court, and many believe that the libel case which ensued changed the course of art history.
