A Question of Security
The communiqué at the end of the recent NATO Summit meeting underlined the problems facing the Allies in their pursuit of peace - particularly the growth in military strength of the Warsaw Pact. Mr Karaman lis, the Greek Prime Minister, speaking in his capacity as Honorary Chairman of the Atlantic Council, said that ' We are all aware that between last year and now certain critical question marks have risen in the area of the Alliance which are still awaiting satisfactory answers.' Nevertheless the communique stated that ' the allied leaders are strengthened in their resolve to preserve the solidarity of the Alliance and restore it where impaired, by removing causes which disturb it among allies.'
The position of Portugal, the conflict between Greece and Turkey and a distrust of the United States after its withdrawal from Indo-China, have put severe strains on the Western Alliance and, in an era of so-called detente, its whole existence has been called into question.
Brian Beedham examines the role and validity of the Atlantic Alliance and considers how it is likely to survive in the coming years.
