The proceedings of the 14th Extraordinary Congress of the Czechoslovak Communist Party in August 1968.
On 22 August 1968 Soviet forces invaded Czechoslovakia to stop the liberalisation of the country under Dubcek and to forestall the dismissal of the hard-liners in the party by the Congress due to be held in September 1968. But right under the noses of the Soviet troops that Congress was held: it was convened within a few hours of the news of the invasion.
Tonight's programme reconstructs the events of the Congress from the records of the proceedings which have now become available.
