The sixteenth annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, Ireland.The contest was won by Monaco, their only win to date, with French national Severine and the song "Un banc, un arbre, une rue".The voting system used in this contest had clear weaknesses because some countries decided to give out more points than others, meaning that juries could attempt to affect their own country's chances of winning.Group performances of up to six people were allowed for the first time, where previously only soloists or duets had been allowed to compete. Another first for this contest was that broadcasters were required to televise all the songs in a preview show in the run up to the live final.Politics was once again on the agenda as the BBC were concerned that hostilities in Northern Ireland might provoke a bad reaction to the British song, they therefore decided to pick Northern Irish singer Clodagh Rodgers who was popular in both countries to represent them. She says she received death threats from the IRA for representing the UK.
