The Hairy Bikers set off for the Henley Royal Regatta, examining the history and conventions of afternoon tea and filling hampers with cakes and treats as they go.

When it comes to afternoon tea, the British like nothing more than a sweet treat to go with it. The Hairy Bikers, Dave and Si, set off for the Henley Royal Regatta, and on their journey they fill their hampers with cakes and treats made along the way.

But why do the British have such a love affair with teatime treats? In their quest to find out, Dave and Si stop off at a swanky hotel to examine the history and conventions of tea, where they are forced to don suits.

Next, the Hairies make Bakewell tart in the Original Bakewell Pudding Shop in Derbyshire, before travelling back in time on a pair of priceless Brough Superior motorbikes. They arrive at Chatsworth House and bake scones with maple syrup and buttermilk.

In search of hints and tips on how to make the perfect Victoria sandwich, the boys visit the WI and cook their own version, but will it satisfy the judges' criteria? Finally, the boys hit Henley and cook chewy posh cookies with sour cherries and chocolate chips. They serve afternoon tea to the rowers from Tees Rowing Club, before taking to the water themselves.

The hour-long special will showcase the best of the 2009 exhibition and look back to uncover the secret of its enduring appeal. 

Held every year since 1769, the Summer Exhibition is unique. Running from June 8 to August 16, it is the biggest open-submission contemporary art exhibition in the world, and the longest-running annual art event. The show displays a wide range of new work by both acclaimed and completely unknown artists in all media - including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and architecture. 

Andrew Graham-Dixon tracks the progress of four unknown artists who have submitted work for consideration this year. He loves their work, but will their pictures make it through the make-or-break judging process and into the final show? 

The Culture Show talks to some of the leading artists exhibiting this year. New Royal Academician Michael Landy - famous for having destroyed all of his possessions - talks about why he is now making portraits. The programme also follows two legends of the sixties art scene, painter John Hoyland and sculptor Allen Jones, as they prepare work for the exhibition; and video art sceptic Mark Kermode talks to Richard Wilson, who is curating the Summer Exhibition's first ever room dedicated to video art.

There is also exclusive access to the judging of the Wollaston Award and the winner of the 25,000 pound prize is revealed. Previous winners include David Hockney, the Chapman brothers and Jeff Koons.

Plus a spectacular performance by art lover Beth Ditto and band of the moment Gossip, playing to the crowds at the Summer Exhibition's glamorous preview party.

Waldemar Januszczak tells the story of 19th-century French artist Manet's dramatic life.

Waldemar Januszczak tells the story of the man often cited as the father of the Impressionists. Manet's dramatic life provoked such controversial works as Dejeuner sur l'herbe.

Manet is one of the main candidates for the title of the most important artist there has been. As the reluctant father of Impressionism, and the painter of Dejeuner sur l'herbe, he can probably be accused of inventing modern art. But his story is fascinating on many other levels.

As a piece of compelling biography, Manet's is the unlikely tale of the stubborn son of the most highly placed judge in France who decides to become an artist and embarrass his father. The resulting family tensions are the stuff of legend. His mother, by the way, was from a family that still supplies Sweden with its royalty.

Then there was Manet's dramatic private life, including exotic romantic affairs and a particularly horrible death when, riddled with syphilis and gangrene, Manet had to have his leg amputated.

But none of this would matter a jot were it not for the revolutionary art it provoked and coloured. Always cited as the father of the Impressionists, Manet stubbornly refused to show with them, and was careful to maintain an aesthetic distance from Monet, Renoir and the others. While they worshipped him, he looked down on them, preferring to continue his own remarkable departure from the traditional ways of art. The scandalous paintings with which he made his reputation - the outrageously sexy Olympia, the relentlessly paraphrased Dejeuner sur l'herbe - are the most totemic images in French 19th-century art. And the story of how Manet was rejected from the official salon, and ended up instigating the Salon des Refuses, can be understood as the epoch's key cultural event.

Using the life of Manet as his narrative arch, Waldemar Januszczak tells the story of a complex and difficult man who started a revolution that continues to rumble on today.

Kirsty receives a threatening letter from an angry constituent who continues to stalk her. She's later distraught when the police inform her that he set fire to his wife's home, injuring the whole family. She flees to Danny and Scott's flat where the hostility between her and Scott is barely concealed.

When Danny confronts Jo about her excessive drinking she reacts angrily. She later relents but refuses to seek counsel elsewhere.
