Series exploring the secrets of our underwater world. The team see how parts of the Southern Ocean are warming twice as fast as the world's other oceans and look at its impact.

The team investigates why parts of the Southern Ocean are warming twice as fast as the rest of the world's oceans and looks at the impact of this phenomenon. 

Expedition leader Paul Rose, environmentalist Philippe Cousteau Jr, maritime archaeologist Dr Lucy Blue and marine biologist and oceanographer Tooni Mahto brave some of the roughest seas and the strongest winds on the planet. 

They go in search of one of the planet's most curious and enigmatic creatures - the weedy sea dragon. They explore kelp forests to investigate how they're being threatened by the rise in sea temperatures and a new predator. They dive to one of the thousand shipwrecks in these waters, and in a unique sunken valley, they search for mysterious deep ocean creatures normally found hundreds of metres below the surface. And they enter a maze of perilous sea caves to hunt for evidence of ancient sea creatures that can reveal how this ocean formed.

David Attenborough is a passionate Darwinian, and sees evolution as the cornerstone of all the programmes and series he has ever made. Here, he shares his personal view on Darwin's controversial idea. Taking us on a journey through the last 200 years, he tracks the changes in our understanding of the natural world. Ever since Darwin, major scientific discoveries have helped to underpin and strengthen Darwin's revolutionary idea so that today, the pieces of the puzzle fit together so neatly that there can be little doubt that Darwin was right. As David says: 'Now we can trace the ancestry of all animals in the tree of life and demonstrate the truth of Darwin's basic proposition. All life is related.'

David asks three key questions: how and why did Darwin come up with his theory of evolution? Why do we think he was right? And why is it more important now than ever before?

David starts his journey in Darwin's home at Down House in Kent, where Darwin worried and puzzled over the origins of life. He goes back to his roots in Leicestershire, where he hunted for fossils as a child and where another schoolboy unearthed a significant find in the 1950s, and he revisits Cambridge University, where both he and Darwin studied and where many years later the DNA double helix was discovered, providing the foundations for genetics.

At the end of his journey in the Natural History Museum in London, David concludes that Darwin's great insight revolutionised the way in which we see the world. We now understand why there are so many different species, and why they are distributed in the way they are. But above all, Darwin has shown us that we are not set apart from the natural world and do not have dominion over it. We are subject to its laws and processes, as are all other animals on earth to which, indeed, we are related.

The family story is that Frederick failed to duck down when shells began falling nearby, despite the fact everyone else around him dived for cover. But a letter written by Frederick's widow to her son's school soon after the war reveals the sad truth behind the story.

Another family story about Frederick is that he joined the army to escape his parents. Hoping to understand the reasons, Fiona investigates the life of Frederick's father, a seemingly respectable Victorian photographer. It soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems with William Crouch, a larger-than-life rogue and star of a celebrated court case.

Fiona next returns to the home of the Bruce family, the small Scottish fishing village of Hopeman, where her family eked out a living for generations. Documents she uncovers in the local library reveal that some of the hardships her family faced were actually self-inflicted.
